about

Words are more powerful and valuable than ever. Digital and social media has put a spotlight on what we say and how we say it.

In 2024, trying to increase the popularity of your brand, or grow your online community, without a clearly defined tone-of-voice is like trying to do the gardening with chopsticks. In his first Lunchtime Learning session, The Write Stuff, David will talk through examples of brands that are nailing it and failing it in the tone-of-voice department, share tips on how to sharpen up the writing you do for your business and look at ways to tackle community management from an editorial perspective. May contain lols.

David Levin is a writer, tone-of-voice specialist and agency founder who started his career as an intern at MTV (making tea for popstars and boybands) before becoming an in-house writer at the music channel for several years. He went freelance, writing for a number of magazines, brands and a Digital Emmy award-winning YouTube channel before setting up a Twitter account for his local pub for a bit of a laugh, which unexpectedly gained a cult following, won Time Out’s Social Account of the Year and led to him accidentally becoming the UK’s first professional tweeter. His social agency, That Lot, which he started with a bloke off the telly, hired platform specialists and ran feeds for the likes of Spotify, Amazon and Have I Got News for You as well as many small and medium sized businesses. David led the agency’s editorial offering, overseeing a team of 30+ writers and defining tone-of-voice for clients. He’s been a regular speaker at Social Media Week and previously ran the writing section of The Guardian’s social media masterclass. David is a passionate believer that by sharpening up your words, you can transform your brand or business. He’s also his mum’s favourite poet.
