about
Join acclaimed journalist Stuart Bailie for a lunchtime of deep-dive storytelling with Sue Pentel, a figure who has become synonymous with unwavering solidarity in Belfast. While Sue recently made headlines for her high-profile arrest during a Palestine protest at Barclays Bank, her journey in activism stretches back decades.
In this exclusive interview, we trace the roots of Sue’s conviction, exploring the formative influences and global movements that shaped the woman behind the activist.
Born and raised in North London in a large orthodox Jewish community, Sue joined marches against the war in Vietnam as a teenager. She moved to Belfast in 1976, after completing a degree in Canterbury to join John, who she had met at college.
Sue and John helped establish Gaelscoil na bhFál in Iveagh and worked in Irish medium early years and community development until 2021 when she retired. She has been active as an anti-zionist Jew for Palestine for many years and is a member of Jews for Palestine-Ireland and the Ireland Palestine Solidarity Campaign.
