ILLUSTRATED PORTRAITS OF QUEER PIONEERS

Opening as part of Late Night Art on Thursday 2nd November at 6pm, this series features portraits of some of the artists and activists who have made an impact Mel Carroll’s life throughout the years.

Some words from Mel Carroll on this original work:

‘Each has struck an emotional chord with me and, for me, are queer pioneers. …From being transfixed by George Michael’s armpit on the cover of the Faith album as a 10-year-old in a record shop… …to how a popstar can become a (gay) icon through fashion and image as Jean Paul Gaultier transported Madonna into her platinum phase on her Blonde Ambition tour… …forming my first impressions of San Francisco through the wonderfully eclectic and camp Tales of The City on Channel 4 as a small-town 16-year-old in the early ’90s – and then discovering the series of books by Armistead Maupin… …to my introduction to further gay literature in my uni years, reading Giovanni’s Room by James Baldwin… …to discovering the work of Keith Harring in the late 1990s – and becoming obsessed with the New York art world of the 1980s and fearful of the AIDS crisis that loomed over it and the rest of the world… …to being introduced to the unapologetic, multi-coloured portrayal of queer life and femininity through the films of Pedro Almodóvar… …to the pure disco heaven and escapism of hearing Patrick Cowley and Sylvester in gay clubs around the world… …to learning more about the fight for civil rights and the life of Harvey Milk through the late noughties movie… Some of these experiences will resonate with others. And others will have their own gay trailblazers who they consider to be Queer Pioneers. These are some of mine . . .’
