about
Musical Chairs
The work focuses on visiting the past, as if flicking through a stale, sticky, family album. Remembering for example a perfect photograph of family home life, siblings lined up in an interior room with stark wallpaper behind. The paintings and drawings express the sense of place; how things were and how displaced memories are revisited.
The process is quick and energetic using brash bold, bright colours. The square perfectly shaped canvas is used as it contradicts the distorted placement of the figure within the home space. The mundane rhythm of domesticity is created through repeated patterns crudely layered with complementary brush strokes surrounded by empty chairs. This symbolises the home, motherhood and loss.
Artist Bio
Janet Morris is a local artist whose work relates to the importance of family dynamics within the domestic environment; whether as a place of belonging, protection or even imprisonment.
