On Saturday, November 27th, Belfast’s Black Box hosts what has become a classic pairing on the Irish psych circuit over the last few years: Cork’s The Altered Hours with Belfast drone-pop septet Documenta.

In that time, the Altered Hours have been headlining tours in the UK & Europe, creating what some journalists have described as a “cult-like” status. Playing everywhere from ex-government buildings, deconsecrated churches, sheds, parties & anywhere else that will have them, they have scooped critical acclaim from the likes of The Fader, Brooklyn Vegan, The Quietus, Clash and many more. The band’s highly-anticipated second album, Convertible, is out via Pizza Pizza Records on September 24th 2021.

Documenta’s lysergic drone-pop fully espouses Sonic Boom’s mantra, “three chords good, two chords better, one chord best.” Running with that idea of minimalism equals maximalism, and imbuing it with a beatific four-guitar attack and repetition (repetition, repetition) the Joe Greene-fronted band’s Touch Sensitive-released second album, Drone Pop #1, is widescreen, kosmische-leaning psychedelia at its most rapt. Documenta’s forthcoming double album, Drone Pop #3, is set for release in the coming months.
