Streetsounds Electro 4 & 5: A Key Chapter in Hip-Hop’s Early Evolution
The Streetsounds Electro series, released in the early 1980s, stands as one of the most influential platforms for showcasing the burgeoning hip-hop and electro-funk scene, providing a template for future generations to come. Volumes 4 and 5, released in 1984, exemplify the explosive creativity of the era, blending cutting-edge production with raw, urban energy. These albums not only captured the zeitgeist of the streets but also provided a global stage for lesser-known artists to shine. The Watson brothers, Noel and Maurice, were the Belfast born Remixers and Curators behind many of the series early output. They brought an infectious energy to the tracks, exemplifying the DIY ethos of the era. Their minimalist production and catchy hooks helped cement 4 & 5 as cult classics within the electro canon.
Noel has curated a special 40th Anniversary event in partnership with Belfast’s NEVER NEVER outlet to celebrate their iconic status, featuring a limited edition specially designed NEVER NEVER T-Shirt, New York City Time Capsule exhibition plus a playback of the original vinyl copies of these 2 seminal albums.
