We Were Always Here
Documentary, LGBTQIA+
Dir. Elspeth Vischer | 2025 | 30 mins
We Were Always Here is a documentary made with the LGBTQIA+ Heritage Project NI Project and HERe NI and that tells the story of queer spaces past and present in Belfast and beyond. Through LGBTQIA+ women and non-binary people who have carved out this vital space, we learn of queer history and how these ‘places of Pride’ continue to flourish in new ways.
The screening will be followed by a Q&A with the film’s director, Elspeth Vischer, and a live performance from Strange New Places.
Strange New Places
Strange New Places are a Belfast-based queer-punk band of right-on radicals with low self-esteem; a band where queerness and neurodivergence intersect, and intersect hard. Sometimes they intersect in fun and interesting ways and other times they intersect in strange and annoying ways. Each member looks like they’re in a different band, and sometimes they sound like it too. In June 2025, they released their debut album, Second Puberty and now they’re taking it out to show it off a little.
In Autumn 2025, they played Belfast, Drogheda, Dublin, Bristol, London, and Brighton and had such a good time, with such an amazing response that they’ve decided to do more in Spring 2026. You can catch them soon with dates in Glasgow, Edinburgh, Leeds, London, & Nottingham.
This event is part of Safe & Sound, a project that has been proudly supported by Belfast City Council and funded through Ending Violence Against Women & Girls fund.
