“Sometimes you have to live it to sing it, and Scottish songwriter Phil Campbell has lived it. Major labels and critical acclaim. Bands, solo records, and eclectic collaborations. Highs, lows…and everything in between. But any musical scars he may bear from time spent honing his craft have only served to embolden his work and make him the artist he is today.”
Praised for his ability to channel a primal Springsteen howl one moment, then evoke a tender Sam Cooke croon the next, the joy is in never quite knowing which musical alley he’ll wander up when the moment takes him. And the songwriting? Honest, unflinching, yet somehow widescreen and cinematic. Imbued with an innate sense of musicality – and born with a voice so uniquely classic it’s impossible not to love – Campbell is quite simply a musician’s musician, and one who is now calling on past experience to look to the future. This is a man with stories to tell, and songs that need sung. Perhaps now more than ever. – RODDY HART 2023
Phil was a key part of Roddy Hart’s ‘Roaming Roots’ show at this year’s Celtic Connections which featured some magnificent singers from Justin Currie to Jesca Hoop,
but there was tacit acknowledgement on stage and raucous appreciation in the crowd of the evening’s star turn: roistering ex-Temperance Movement frontman Philip Seth Campbell. He absolutely aced ‘Hotel California’, ‘Born To Run’ and a particularly mighty ‘Oh! Darling’
“His new record is a gem that will sit alongside all the classics” – Theo Katzman
“What a voice” – Peter Brewis (Field Music)
“Undeniable” – The Line Of Best Fit
