We want to support and promote a diverse, innovative and inclusive music scene. This informal course is open to women and those who identify as non-binary and provides opportunity to learn the basics in audio recording, creating soundscapes, making beats and DJing.
Using a visual brief created by Sound/Visual artist Helena Hamilton as inspiration you will create your own piece of audio using a range of methods. The course will cover introduction to the following;
“Press Record”– Capturing found sounds and creating immersive soundscapes – learn the basic features and functions of a Digital recorder or tablet. The task, to record sounds within your environment, whether natural or created! Once recorded, we will demonstrate and guide you through basic software that will enable you to create new sounds and notes, set atmospheres and build melodies.
“Beat Making”– This is the opportunity to create beats and bars that you’ve played in your head up until now. Ideas can be inspired by producers or tunes you love or guided by how your feeling at that very minute. Once we demonstrate the basic features and functions of the music making software, you’ll lead the way and shape the rest. All will take place in a relaxed, judgement free zone!
“DJ Skills”– We’ve all compiled playlists but now’s the chance to learn the basic features, functions and techniques of any self-respecting DJ. You’ll be guided through the steps to prepare a track to be played, headphone cues, mix points, song structure and beat-matching techniques. Most important of all, we’ll discuss the importance of passion for the music you select. Hands on music, hearts in music, love your sound is the mantra we’ll be following! (We have a bank of music to work with but it’s always best working with music you love. Please bring any music you’ve purchased or previously made on a memory pen please.)
“Set Building”We’ll put you in control of the audio soundtrack and help you plan your performance for a guest slot at NEO NEO #8, using all the skills learnt from session. (Live performance is optional, it is totally up to you!) The live event will take place on Saturday 8th June in the Green Room at the Black Box.
