about
A digital celebration of LGBTQIA+ themed film comes to Imagine Festival! We are delighted to present a selection from this year’s Five Films for Freedom and BFI Flare London Film Festival.
Join us to see the latest selection of short films for 2026 in discussion with British Council Director of Film, Briony Hanson who will be joined by actor/writer Gerard McCarthy and Joe Walsh & Cara McCann from HERe NI LGBTQIA+ Heritage Project.
British Council’s Five Films for Freedom and BFI Flare London work in partnership to celebrate global LGBTQIA+ stories every year, in support of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, intersex and asexual people across the world.

British Council’s Five Films for Freedom is the world’s widest-reaching digital celebration of LGBTQIA+ themed film. Now in its 12th year, it is a phenomenal global programme enabling us to stand in solidarity with LGBTQIA+ communities internationally, particularly in places where freedom and equal rights are limited. In that time, over 23 million people have watched in more than 200 countries
and principalities; embracing the message that Love is a Human Right. BFI Flare: London LGBTQIA+ Film Festival, will celebrate its 40th anniversary in 2026. It is the biggest LGBTQIA+ film festival in Europe and takes place every year in the British Film Institute, Southbank, London.
