about

Men (2022) explores the attempted recovery from trauma and abuse of Harper (Jessie Buckley) as she escapes from her London home to the seemingly picturesque solitude of the English countryside. However strange sightings and encounters begin, and a fractured sense of reality builds to examine the wider impact of toxic masculinity towards our main character.

Coming from the director of films like Annihilation (2018), Ex Machina (2014) and the recently released and controversial Civil War (2024), it’s no surprise that Alex Garland’s particular brand of horror has divided audiences. With letterboxd reviews ranging from 5 stars to ‘weird and too much’, it’s a film that pulls from our understanding of traditional folk horror and subverts it completely.

This screening of Men (2022) will be preceded by a screening of the short film BANSHEE (2019), introduced by filmmaker Mervyn Marshall. This event will be complimented by a solo photographic exhibition titled ‘She Heard a Wind’ by Mervyn Marshall in the Green Room.

Ghouls on Film is a monthly feminist horror film club, showing films that challenge the representations of women within the genre. Expect cult classics, independent releases and rare lesser-known films that explore how women can find agency in the world of horror.

Supported by Film Hub NI, part of the BFI Film Audience Network, awarding funds from National Lottery.
