about
Join Ghouls on Film as we explore how the structures around us can unsettle, confine, and haunt. For this event, we will be delving into architectural horror, where the boundary between reality and illusion blurs, dread lingers, and the everyday becomes uncanny. In this unique screening event, we present two films that encapsulate the slow, simmering terror of spaces that seem to breathe with their own life.
Whether you’re a fan of the strange and suspenseful or just curious about the interplay of space and psyche, this event offers a fresh take on horror without the usual jump scares or gore. These films draw you into a subtle, ever-deepening unease, perfect for those who appreciate horror as a cerebral, immersive experience.
The Black Tower
In The Black Tower (1987), acclaimed filmmaker John Smith presents an enigmatic journey through a seemingly mundane piece of architecture that takes on a life of its own. A man finds himself haunted by a black tower that appears to follow him around London, his perspective unraveling as he slips from unease into obsession. Through colour-coded images, visual puns, and a quietly unsettling narration, The Black Tower blurs the line between reality and imagination, building at times a hilarious creeping dread that stays with you long after the screen fades to black.
Last Year at Marienbad
A surreal masterpiece of modern cinema, Alain Resnais’ Last Year at Marienbad (1961) takes place in an ornate, cathedral-like château where the past and present dissolve into each other. A man and a woman wander through endless hallways and mirrored rooms, unable to shake a persistent feeling of déjà vu. Each step pulls them deeper into a maze of memory, desire, and existential dread. This classic of the French New Wave, celebrated for its dreamlike cinematography and hauntingly ambiguous story, turns the grand, hollow spaces of the château into characters of their own, amplifying the tension and mystery that linger in every gilded corner.
If you’re drawn to the haunting atmosphere of liminal spaces, slow-building tension, and thought-provoking themes, this screening is for you. We invite you to explore horror that ventures into the depths of psychological unease and architectural dread.
