about

‘Only The Stripped Thing’

During 2020-2022 Belfast writer Una Woods provided artist Susan Hughes with a selection of her poems to respond to visually. Susan sat with isolated fragments of the poems and then slowly composed abstract collages in response. Una and Susan have never spoken to one another or met in person. The success of their quiet dialogue comes from shared subject matter, a common sensitivity and way of looking at the world and through the respect they have for one another’s work.

Susan Hughes is a multi-media artist and fiddle player from Belfast. She graduated with a Masters in Art from the University of Ulster in 2021. She is a current participant of the Freelands Foundation Artists’ Programme and is a studio holder at Orchid Studios, Belfast. Hughes has completed many artist residencies in Ireland and Scandinavia where she has used her fiddle playing as a bartering tool to gain access to local stories.

Una Woods is a Belfast writer whose stories, prose pieces and poems have been published in collections in Ireland the UK and America.  Her writing reflects a stripped landscape of early consciousness from the atmosphere of city roads and streets to the countryside of Co Down. Her play  ‘Grace before meals’ has toured Ireland with Cello Productions.
