about

Ghouls on Film presents Crashing Out; An Afternoon of Righteous Anger and Feminine Rage.

Horror films are complex creatures. We often think of their depictions of violence against women, with male directed slashers and exploitation cinema reflecting a startling reality. However, they can also offer a space for a healing and cathartic act; for revenge to be enacted on-screen. They can be an opportunity to turn the tables against abusers, and offer a vision of freedom to survivors in a world that doesn’t want to acknowledge the truth; that systemic violence is launched against us every day.

At Ghouls on Film, we have decided to respond by uplifting our community, creating a space of safety and support to share collective outrage.

Crashing Out is an all day event across both spaces of The Black Box, combining film screenings, archive footage, workshops, live performance, and reflective audience spaces; all with the support of Film Hub NI.

70% of all ticket sales will go towards the incredibly important work of Nexus NI and Women’s Aid.

Check out all the events we have planned below, and where you can grab your tickets.

Participants will explore practical tools, share experiences, and engage in collaborative problem-solving exercises aimed at reclaiming safety in nightlife and public spaces. This event will be led by the Safe Night NI Team, and provide a safe space for participants to share their experiences if they feel they want to do so, while participating in an creative workshop.

Changing Attitudes in the Archives: Screening and Discussion

Facilitated by Elspeth Vischer

The Main Theatre

3 – 4.30pm

Free

Stepping back to look forward, this session will delve into elements of the Digital Film Archive with a gender-focused lens. Questioning (mis)representation and erasure of the past, Elspeth Vischer will draw in aspects of her work with community groups on the Northern Ireland Now Project, that seeks to redress the imbalance of archive materials and work with FLINTA,  and other underrepresented groups, to cement their perspectives in our local history. Elspeth will also screen her own film work that uses archive and other tools to discuss intersectional feminism in contemporary Belfast. Please join for discussions of how the archive can shape our perspectives and how we can be involved in changing this within contemporary society.

Performance by Aoife Wolf & screening of Companion (2025)

Featuring a binding spell conducted by Laura Morgan

6 – 9pm

£10/concessions £5

Throughout the evening performance & screening, The Green Room will act as a chill-out space, curated for reflection and self-care. A space will be held as a shrine for those who have suffered at the hands of violence against women, as well as a point of action. Audience members are encouraged to bring something to add to the shrine, or they can create something to be added.

Ghouls on Film is a feminist horror film club, showing films that challenge the representations of women within the genre. Expect cult classics, independent releases and rare lesser-known films that explore how women can find agency in the world of horror.

Supported by Film Hub NI, part of the BFI Film Audience Network, awarding funds from National Lottery.
