about

DJ and producer Carlton Doom standing in front of a black wall. He wears a black t-shirt with four white vertical lines on the front.

The kid is back. Long time friend of the Black Box and Belfast’s very own garage and breaks royalty Carlton Doom kits out another Friday night with a selection of tunes that reflect his extensive and eclectic electronic tastes. 7pm-close, free in.

Born & Bred in Belfast, Carlton Doom is the pseudonym of Chris Hanna, one of Ireland’s foremost respected electronic music producers. With a reputation for defying stereotypes, his output moves seamlessly from oldskool breakbeat to deconstructed techno, wonky bassline garage, heavyweight electro and more all with a signature style – the genres may change but is always immediately identifiable as having his fingerprints all over. He calls it Boom Boom Music.

Doom has released on Hypercolour, Hotflush, Dixon Avenue Basement Jams, Lobster Theremin, and Or:La’s imprint Deep Sea Frequency. Doom’s tracks have found him fans in Four Tet, Jamie XX, Daniel Avery, Leftfield, Avalon Emerson, Anz, I Jordan, Emerald Rose, Oneman and more – while picking up regular plaudits from DJ Mag and Mixmag.

Carlton began producing in his teens – writing R&B and Hip Hop instrumentals for American rappers. At just 15 years old, he started sneaking underage into nightclubs, and from there immersed himself in Irelands underground techno scene – discovering electronic music at notorious events like Shine and Twitch. Forthright and outspoken on mental health, music and politics, Doom is not one to shy away from conversation despite creating personas for his musical output. He has collaborated with the likes of Ejeca and Gemma Dunleavy, and retains a deep knowledge and love for hip hop still today.

Loyal to his hometown, he has resisted the call to move away and abandon the city; instead staying to give back to his local scene. Carlton is resident DJ at AVA Festival – his Boiler Room at AVA is universally hailed as one of their best, most energetic shows ever. He remains an in-demand DJ across Ireland, but also further afield – with several appearances at Glasgow’s famous Sub Club, London’s Printworks, Austin’s SXSW Festival & many more – sharing stages with Paranoid London, DJ Stingray 313, Riz La Teef, DJ EZ, Green Velvet, Will Saul, Lone & others. In the mix, Carlton has graced the decks for BBC Radio 1 and Radio 6, NTS, Rinse FM, Noods Radio and more – his Lobster Theremin session was selected as one of Red Bull’s best mixes of 2020, while his DJ Mag Fresh Kicks features a tracklist entirely of his own productions.
