about

Ghouls on Film is delighted to welcome audiences to a specially commissioned exhibition by artist Triona Doyle, created as part of the BFI season ‘In Dreams Are Monsters’. Triona is a Belfast based mixed media artist, who uses a figurative and dreamlike style predominantly inspired by renaissance, surrealist and early abstract art.

In response to the BFI season, ‘In Dreams Are Monsters’, this collection of work visually explores a relationship between fear of the female gender as psychoanalysis, and the significance of female sexuality, generative power and the ‘abject’ body, (Kristeva, ‘Powers of Horror, 1980) as narratives within the horror film genre.

‘All human societies have a conception of the monstrous-feminine, or what it is about woman that is shocking, terrifying, horrific, abject.’ (Creed, ‘Film, Feminism, Psychoanalysis’, 1993)

As part of this exhibition launch, we will be screening a selection of silent horror films courtesy of Northern Ireland Screen’s Digital Film Archive, with Black Box institute Skull DJ’s, Stuart Watson and Ryan Fitzsimmons, curating a suitably spooky and atmospheric DJ set to suit.
