The Shapes Between Us: NI Dance Music Culture on Screen

The people, places and music that shaped Northern Irish club culture from 1980-1992.

Running club nights in Northern Ireland during the 1980s and 1990s took commitment, courage, and a large record collection. In between the domineering cultures of opposing sides in a bloody conflict, the passions and styles of many young people were to be found behind the doors of the nightclubs on dark quiet streets.

The music played on turntables in clubs such as The Delta, The Plaza, Tokyo Joe’s and The Art College helped shape the fabric of a counterculture which influenced many young lives, from the mods, punks and goths to the indie kids and ravers. This is a story rarely mentioned in the historical narrative of NI.

The Shapes Between Us tells the story of the evolution of club culture in Belfast, through audio interviews recorded with key figures on the scene, curated film archive and an evocative score. Contributors include Mary Armstrong, Iain McCready, David Holmes, Greg Fenton, Solveig Simms, Keith Connolly, and many more.

The Shapes Between Us is a collaborative archive film project presented by Phil Kieran (DJ, producer, artist, and composer), Stuart Sloan (Second Chance Cinema) and Sara Gunn-Smith (Film Hub NI, part of the BFI Film Audience Network).
