djDefend the Dancefloor – A Faculty Lecture by Claire Hall

Claire Hall is an events producer and DJ based in Belfast. Since 2013 she has produced live performances and DJed under the moniker of ‘Venus Dupree’ -a name that nods to the icons of The Legendary New York House and Ballroom scene. She brought Voguing and NYC Ballroom Culture to Belfast in a live performance called HOUSE that took place in the MAC Nov 2015- this was the first that any member of the scene or work of this nature had been presented in Ireland. Most recently she co-founded female DJ collective GIRL alongside Marion Hawkes as a platform to promote women working in music. In this informal lecture- Claire will talk about the roots of Disco/ House and Techno as movements of activisim and look at how this culture has evolved since it’s beginnings of black/ queer resistance to a straight and male dominated world. She will ask the question ‘Is there a place in todays electronic scenes for women or those perceived as the other?’

As part of Women’s Work festival 24th-29th May
