It started with an email which came completely out of nowhere…

Hi Adam,

You don’t know me, but I read about you and Seedhead recently and thought I’d drop you a line.

I own several buildings in the city – including a grand old 3-storey bank building on the Upper Newtownards Rd. It will be empty for a year or two while plans to develop them are with the (extremely slow) planning dept; they’re all structurally safe and sound and I’d basically much rather see them in some kind of use – ideally to help out creative types – than lying empty.

I really don’t mind what creative use they’re put to – poetry nights, cinema evenings, pop-up galleries, arts workshops, hell, even custom motorbike builders… the possibilities are probably endless. I don’t mind if they’re merely used as workshop spaces to create in, or if they’re used commercially, e.g. for pop-up events to raise money. But I hate to see beautiful buildings go to waste, and if I was based in Belfast I know I’d be filling them full of old furniture, motorbikes and art and trying to use them myself!

Cheers…

What happened next?

What did we learn?

How was the hangover?

Adam Turkington of Seedhead Arts and Chair of the Belfast Bankers will talk about what made the Bank work and what it says about creative practice, public planning and the concept of community.
